James Cameron’s Avatar (2009) reset the bar for feature visual effects — a fully realized digital world in Pandora, performance-capture-driven characters, and stereoscopic photography at a scale the industry hadn’t attempted. Weta Digital delivered the bulk of those effects, work that won the Academy Award and BAFTA for Best Visual Effects.
As a Lead R&D Technical Director at Weta Digital in Wellington, New Zealand, I spent roughly three years on the production — building tools and pipeline technology used to create the film’s effects.
