Battlestar Galactica is the best show on TV

It should be obvious to anyone that’s bothered to watch the re-incarnated version of Battlestar Galactica that it is the best show currently on TV. I had placed it up with Lost, but the last few episodes of Lost have been, well, problematic.

This show is simply great because it has great stories, with great acting, and great direction. This should at least give a hint to those who have not seen it, that is it NOTHING LIKE the 1970’s show (even though I like it, I know it is horribly cheesy and outdated). The show picks up all the nice original ideas - that we humans originated from the stars, the battles with machines, the Greek mythology - and simultaneously amplifies it and also - as all great science fiction - brings in social issues with which we are currently struggling. So, we have episodes on terrorists, and torture, and racism, and paranoia.

The direction of the show is realism. There are rules. There is a well-known chain of command. It seems as the machinery works - no lasers or photon torpedos, just bullets. People make difficult decisions and live with often harsh consequences. The action shots and effects don’t presume to know where the action is going, so it takes on a cinema-verite’ quality that compliments the rest of the show.

And there are plotlines and characters that are interesting.

All this adds up to the best show on tv, and i hope it stays on.

Show is finally coming out of a four month hiatus, and the premier is first week of January. Can’t wait!
